ANIMAYO 2021 Poster Contest — Workshop

About the workshop


This workshop offers an opportunity to develop poster design skills based on a conscious design process (in opposition to trial and error). The workshop will be organized around the Animayo 2021 poster contest to give students an opportunity for their work to be internationally recognized. The poster’s general theme is creativity and imagination in one of these creative fields; animation, visual effects or virtual reality. The objective of this workshop is to develop the comprehension of the creative context and process involved in the conception of a poster. The workshop will be based on the Animayo 2021 international poster competition theme. Each student will be asked to implement theoretical and practical knowledge in the objective of creating a powerful poster. The workshop will span over 5 days and will be organized around individual consultations and group discussions.

 

Outcomes

The minimal outcome of this workshop is an additional poster in students’ portfolios, the maximal outcome is winning the Animayo 2021 poster competition (and €500).  At the end of the workshop, each student must present a digital version of hers/his poster.

Workshop description

Schedule​

Students will be asked to work on the subject in three phases:

 

Phase 1: Concepts and sketches

This phase is based on conceptual and formal research. The objective of this phase is to work on concepts and sketches in order to select the most interesting concept that will be developed in the Phase 2. 

 

Phase 2: Style and technique

This phase is based on advanced formal research (advanced sketches and style tests). The objective of this phase is to determine the best visual strategy to convey the concept selected in Phase 1.

 

Phase 3: Final

This phase’s objective is to produce a high quality final poster that will be submitted to the Animayo 2021 international poster competition.

Tomasz Walenta is an editorial illustrator, a graphic designer, a researcher and an educator living in Warsaw, Poland. His clients include The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, TIME Magazine, The New York Times, Fortune Magazine, Scholastic, Politico, The Boston Globe, Foreign Policy, Consumer Reports, Newsweek, Forbes, Reader's Digest and Nautilus.

Walenta holds a Ph.D. in Arts Studies and Practices from Université du Québec à Montréal. The title of his thesis is: “The Talking Image: a study of the practice of visual language for the graphic designer and editorial illustrator.”
